During Trump’s first term, Education Department employees placed on leave after participating in diversity training, says union official

Employees at the Department of Education who had attended diversity training courses encouraged by former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos during the Trump administration have been placed on paid leave as part of Trump’s targeting of DEI programs. At least 55 employees were placed on leave, including public affairs specialists, civil rights attorneys, and program managers. The affected workers will continue to receive full salaries and benefits without performing any work-related tasks.

The move is seen as an attempt to eliminate DEI initiatives within the federal government, with the goal of making employees feel pressured to resign. Employees who attended the Diversity Change Agent training program were particularly targeted, with some being encouraged to resign by offering them eight months of salary and benefits.

Union representatives believe that hundreds of employees attended the Diversity Change Agent trainings, with the department aiming to train 400 employees under this program. Employees who did not specifically work in DEI roles were also placed on paid leave at the Department of Energy as part of Trump’s executive order targeting DEIA programs.

Overall, employees are anxious about potentially losing their jobs and feeling pressured to resign, with concerns about lack of clarity and confusion surrounding the situation. The Education Department has not provided any comment on the matter.
