Celebrity interviews left an impact, but special-ed stories brought about meaningful change | Letter

Eileen Kenna, a former staff writer for The Express, reminisces about her time as a journalist covering stories ranging from Larry Holmes to Princess Grace of Monaco during her 14-year tenure at the newspaper. Growing up in rural Forks Township, Kenna’s love for reading and writing led her to pursue a career in journalism after graduating from Rider College in 1976.

One of Kenna’s most memorable works was shedding light on the segregation of children with special education needs in local school districts. Together with a colleague, she wrote stories that helped bring about change in the education system by advocating for these children to be mainstreamed into their local public schools.

Kenna also recalls encounters with celebrities like Larry Holmes, Billy Joel, and Princess Grace during her time as a journalist. She highlights Larry Holmes’ work with special education students at a summer camp in the Poconos, where he served as a role model for kids who were often ignored or teased in their daily lives.

After leaving The Express in 1989, Kenna pursued a second career in social work, where she continued to work with families on issues of inclusion and fairness in education. She attributes her years in journalism to teaching her valuable lessons about how governments operate and the importance of local news in communities.

Despite the decline of local newspapers, Kenna remains a dedicated newspaper subscriber, emphasizing the role they play in illuminating local lives and stories. These experiences have left a lasting impact on Kenna, shaping her perspective on the importance of journalism and community engagement.
