Maryland man arrested in Westmoreland County for allegedly posing as Pittsburgh police officer – WPXI

Maryland Man Arrested for Impersonating Pittsburgh Police Officer

A Maryland man, Thomas Rooney, was arrested in Hempfield Township for impersonating a Pittsburgh police officer. The incident occurred when Rooney showed up at a woman’s home and insisted she let him inside, claiming to be a officer named John Laney. When the woman said she was calling the police, Rooney continued to press her to open the door.

Pennsylvania State Police were called to the scene and determined that Rooney was not a real officer. He and four others he was with claimed to be out of town looking for work, offering gravel for driveways. Rooney was charged with impersonating a public servant and simple assault, and was taken to Westmoreland County Prison.

Rooney was denied bail due to being considered a flight risk. The incident has raised concerns about individuals impersonating law enforcement officers and the importance of verifying an officer’s credentials.
