Department Launches Outreach Campaign to Encourage Farmers to Plant Trees and Implement Agroforestry Incentives

The Maryland Department of Agriculture has launched a new outreach campaign to encourage farmers to plant trees and participate in agroforestry programs. The campaign highlights the benefits of tree planting, such as increased farm income, improved soil health, and protection of natural resources. The Department is offering incentives for farmers to participate, including cost-sharing for selected practices and a one-time bonus payment for establishing riparian forest buffers. The goal is to plant 5 million trees by 2031 to capture carbon and enhance public health. Eligible practices include riparian forest buffers, alley cropping, hedgerow plantings, windbreaks, silvopasture, and tree and shrub establishment. Farmers interested in participating can visit the Department’s website for more information and access to free technical assistance through local soil conservation districts. The campaign will include a 30-second PSA airing on local TV networks and social media messaging. Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks urges farmers to explore the tree-planting incentives to benefit both their farms and the environment.
