Lawsuit alleges 80-year-old woman died a month after being trapped against a wall by Sleep Number Bed for 2 days

An 80-year-old woman named Rosalind Walker tragically passed away one month after her Sleep Number Bed malfunctioned, trapping her against a wall for two days. The incident occurred in March 2023, and Walker remained stuck until she was finally freed by first responders. She was hospitalized and later transferred to a rehabilitation center before being brought home on hospice care. Unfortunately, she passed away on April 3, 2023.

Walker’s daughter, Angela Moan, filed a wrongful death complaint against Sleep Number Corporation and Leggett & Platt Incorporated, the manufacturers of the bed. The complaint alleges that the bed lowered without warning, trapping Walker with such force that she could not free herself. The lawsuit claims that the bed was sold without adequate instructions or warnings, lacked an audible alert system, and did not have an appropriate release mechanism.

Moan is seeking compensation for her mother’s death, suffering, medical bills, and for the loss of her mother’s companionship. The lawsuit alleges negligence, wrongful death, strict liability, and breach of warranty. The amount of compensation being sought exceeds $25,000. The attorneys involved in the case argue that the bed’s manufacturers should have implemented better safety measures to prevent entrapment, similar to the safety sensors in elevators.

The manufacturers, Sleep Number Corporation and Leggett & Platt Incorporated, have not yet provided comment on the lawsuit. Walker’s attorney emphasized the need for safer bed designs and expressed hope for a resolution that holds the corporations accountable for the tragic incident.
