Schanwald’s career in sports management took off after graduating from Maryland, leading to roles with the United States Air Force Academy, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Chicago White Sox before joining the Chicago Bulls. During his time with the Bulls, he revolutionized the game experience by incorporating entertainment elements and funding the construction of the United Center arena. He is known for his innovative marketing strategies and dedication to mentoring young professionals.

The endowment of the Sports Management Program at Maryland aims to provide students with the necessary skills and connections to succeed in the sports industry. The program, a collaboration between the Smith School of Business, School of Public Health, College of Journalism, and Maryland Athletics, offers specialized courses and networking opportunities. The university plans to build on Schanwald’s donation to become a top destination for students pursuing sports careers.
