The Court denies Boeing’s plea deal connected to 737 Max crashes

A federal judge rejected Boeing’s plea deal tied to a criminal fraud charge related to the fatal crashes of its 737 Max aircraft, expressing concerns about the government-appointed monitor including diversity, equity, and inclusion policies in the selection process. The judge ordered Boeing and the Justice Department to provide details on these policies. Victims’ family members criticized the plea deal as a “sweetheart deal” and sought more input in the process. The deal was intended to allow Boeing to avoid a trial as it tried to recover from safety issues, including a recent incident where a door burst off a flight. The Justice Department accused Boeing of violating a previous plea agreement, leading to the new agreement with a fine of $243.6 million. The judge highlighted that it was unclear what actions Boeing had taken to breach the Deferred Prosecution Agreement. This decision comes after Boeing agreed to plead guilty to misleading regulators about a flight-control system implicated in the crashes of a Lion Air flight in October 2018 and an Ethiopian Airlines flight in March 2019, resulting in the deaths of 346 people. The judge emphasized the importance of selecting the monitor solely based on competency to ensure public confidence in the justice system.
