Outbreak of Legionella in water leads to closure of Maryland state complex buildings in Baltimore – The Washington Post

Several state office buildings in Baltimore, Maryland have been closed after tests revealed the presence of Legionella bacteria in the water supply. Legionella is a type of bacteria that can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia. The affected buildings include the Maryland Department of Health and the Department of Human Services, among others.

The decision to close the buildings was made as a precautionary measure to protect employees and visitors from potential exposure to the bacteria. It is not clear how long the buildings will remain closed while officials work to address the issue. In the meantime, employees have been advised to work remotely if possible.

Legionella bacteria can be found in natural water sources, but can also grow and spread in man-made water systems such as air conditioning units, hot tubs, and plumbing systems. Inhaling contaminated droplets of water can lead to infection with Legionella.

Officials are working to disinfect the water systems in the affected buildings to eliminate the bacteria. Employees are being advised to seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease, such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath.
