Ibrahim Emmanuel De La Cruz, a 25-year-old man, is facing charges for high-volume thefts of U.S. Mail in Washington D.C., Arlington, Virginia, and Bowie, Maryland. In addition to stealing mail from luxury homes, he is also accused of armed robbery of a postal maintenance worker in August. Investigators from multiple law enforcement agencies have connected the thefts to robberies of letter carriers in the D.C. area.
During the investigation, officials found that De La Cruz was using stolen U.S. Postal Service arrow keys to gain access to USPS collection boxes, outdoor package lockers, cluster box units, and apartment mailbox panels. He is also accused of opening bank accounts and credit cards using personal information obtained from the stolen mail. The money from the stolen accounts was allegedly used to pay for student tuition, rent, utilities, and cellphone bills.
Through surveillance camera footage, Instagram posts, and cell phone tracking, investigators linked De La Cruz to multiple mail thefts between February and August. He has been extradited to D.C. to face the allegations.
