Chad Chronister, President-elect Donald Trump’s choice for the Drug Enforcement Administration, has withdrawn his name from consideration. Despite being widely praised by Florida Republicans, including Governor Ron DeSantis, Chronister faced backlash from Trump’s political base due to his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, he arrested a pastor for violating lockdown orders, which were later dropped. Chronister cited the need to focus on serving as the sheriff of Hillsborough County as his reason for withdrawing. He had been tapped by Trump to lead the DEA and received support from the Attorney General and others. However, the criticism over his pandemic response led to his decision. His withdrawal came after former Rep. Matt Gaetz also withdrew his name for consideration as attorney general amid sexual misconduct allegations.
Trump had identified Chronister as someone who would work to secure the border, stop the flow of illegal drugs, and save lives. Despite his long tenure in law enforcement and the support he received from many Florida Republicans, Chronister’s COVID-era record became a significant issue. Congressional Republicans, including Rep. Thomas Massie, expressed relief at his withdrawal, citing concerns over his actions during the pandemic.
Overall, despite being seen as a top-tier pick by many in Florida, Chronister’s handling of the pandemic led to his decision to withdraw from consideration for the DEA administrator role. His withdrawal marks the second time a nominee has stepped back from a Trump administration post, signaling ongoing challenges for the incoming administration.
