The Board of Public Works recently approved $3.6 million in funding for park improvements and land conservation projects in Baltimore City, Carroll, Garrett, and Howard Counties. This funding includes support for the Department of Natural Resources’ Program Open Space Local, Local Parks and Playgrounds Infrastructure, and Rural Legacy programs.
In Garrett County, nearly $1.5 million in Rural Legacy funding was approved to acquire conservation easements on four properties totaling 570 acres in the Bear Creek Rural Legacy Area. This will protect waterways and habitat for wildlife in the area. Other projects funded include the acquisition of additional parkland in Carroll County and the construction of pickleball courts in Howard County.
The Local Parks and Playgrounds Infrastructure Program also received $100,000 for enhancements at Hamilton Elementary and Middle School in Baltimore City. These projects aim to improve recreational opportunities and preserve natural resources in the state. The Board of Public Works, composed of Governor Wes Moore, Treasurer Dereck E. Davis, and Comptroller Brooke E. Lierman, oversees the approval and distribution of these funds.
