Begin with baby steps, right this instant: Honouring the mother tree | Lifestyle

A community on Guåhan recently came together to mourn the death of the last adult håyun lågu tree, a native species that was a significant part of the island’s ecosystem. The event, organized by the Climate Change Alliance, included readings from a children’s book titled “Mother Tree,” which was inspired by the plight of native species facing threats from invasive plants, animals, and insects.

The ceremony, held at the Litekyan overlook, allowed attendees to honor the legacy of the håyun lågu tree, named Serianthes nelsonii after botanist Peter Nelson who introduced it to researchers in 1919. Dr. Else Demeulenaere spoke about her genetic research on the håyun lågu and her team’s efforts to preserve the species for future generations.

The event also highlighted community efforts to protect Guåhan’s natural resources, including a recent National Park Service event where volunteers searched for invasive brown tree snakes. Other initiatives, such as the Friends of Islan Dånó’s snake search on Dånó, have also been funded to help combat threats to native species.

Olympia Terral, a program coordinator at the University of Guam, emphasized the importance of caring for the island’s biocultural diversity and working together to protect the environment. The community’s commitment to conservation was evident in the turnout for the events and the ongoing efforts to preserve Guåhan’s natural treasures.
