Maryland Students’ Academic Standing Revealed in 2024 Report Card

Maryland State Department of Education released its 2024 Report Card, grading schools based on various categories like Academic Achievement and Graduation Rates. While there were some improvements, most schools did not meet their annual targets. African American students showed progress in graduation rates, as did Asian students, but math proficiency remained a challenge for all student groups. State Superintendent Carey Wright plans to revamp the assessment system by 2026-27. Several local school systems, including Baltimore City Schools, Anne Arundel County Schools, and Frederick County Schools, reacted positively to the ratings, noting improvements in their star ratings. Baltimore City Schools saw a decrease in schools in the lowest category and an increase in higher-ranked schools. Anne Arundel County Schools had a higher percentage of four and five-star schools compared to the state average, while Frederick County Schools had a high percentage of schools earning four or five stars. Overall, the report highlights the ongoing efforts to improve academic performance in Maryland schools.
