Maryland Schools Demonstrate Progress on State Report Card, Varied Results in Baltimore Area

The Maryland State Department of Education has released its 2024 Maryland School Report Card, showing improvements in many school systems across the state but also highlighting some districts in the Baltimore region that are struggling with high-performing schools. The report card grades schools on a one-to-five-star scale based on factors like academic achievement, progress, and graduation rates, with 91 schools earning a five-star rating this year, up from 85 last year.

Baltimore County had the most five-star schools in the state with 20, while Anne Arundel and Harford County also showed growth in the number of top-performing schools. However, Baltimore City and Carroll County saw decreases in the number of five-star schools. The Department of Education attributed the statewide growth in scores to improvements on the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program but noted that the number of schools achieving four and five stars still lags behind pre-pandemic levels.

Chronic absenteeism was identified as a key factor contributing to the decline in high-performing schools last year.
