Larry Unger, President and CEO of Maryland Public Television, announces retirement

After 27 years with the network, Larry D. Unger will be retiring from his role as president and CEO of Maryland Public Television next summer. Unger, who took on the position in 2011, will step down on June 30, 2025. Richard Bodorff, Vice Chair of the Maryland Public Broadcasting Commission, will lead the search committee to find Unger’s successor through a national search process starting in January.

During his time with MPT, Unger led the network through significant milestones such as the transition from analog to digital broadcasting, a $9 million studio expansion, and a successful fundraising campaign that raised $12.5 million for the MPT Foundation. He also oversaw the addition of four MPT channels, launched initiatives like MPT Salutes Vietnam Veterans, and established centers for Maryland History Films and Media Literacy & Education.

MPT, a statewide public television network, is known for its award-winning programs like “Chesapeake Collectibles.” Unger’s leadership has been instrumental in the network’s success and growth over the years.
