Transformation of Old Sears into Dynamic Sports Complex by Waldorf

Charles County officials in Waldorf, Md., have recently acquired the former Sears building at St. Charles Towne Center with plans to develop it into a sports and wellness complex. The $7.5 million purchase is part of the county’s efforts to improve recreational offerings and stimulate economic growth.

Commissioner President Reuben B. Collins II expressed the importance of the project in providing much-needed recreational opportunities for Waldorf residents. The decision to repurpose the property followed a study identifying the lack of sports and wellness activities in the area.

The complex will feature a swimming facility, including various amenities such as a competition pool, splash pad, diving areas, and more. Community input is being sought for additional amenities to be incorporated.

The project is part of a larger effort to enhance the quality of life in the county and promote economic development in Waldorf. Various county departments have collaborated to facilitate the acquisition and development of the property.

The transformation of the former Sears building into a community hub reflects a trend in repurposing unused mall spaces. Charles County aims to set an example for blending economic development with public amenities through this initiative.
