In a surprising turn of events, the American people have elected a convicted felon over a woman in the recent election. While Republicans have regained control of the Senate, the House is still up for grabs for Democrats. Despite these setbacks, there have been some small victories for liberals in Tuesday’s election.
In North Carolina, Democrat Josh Stein won the governor’s race, becoming the first Jewish governor in the state’s history. Democrats also won every major executive branch race in the state. Democrat Sarah McBride made history by becoming the first openly transgender person to be elected to Congress, representing Delaware.
Despite the failure of Florida’s abortion rights ballot measure, most states voting on abortion rights amendments have voted in favor of them. In Missouri, where abortion was banned after Roe v. Wade, residents voted for an amendment to protect abortion rights.
In Maryland, Democrat Angela Alsobrooks defeated Republican Larry Hogan for the Senate race, resulting in the first two Black women being elected to the Senate. Democrat Lisa Blunt Rochester also won in Delaware, becoming the first woman and the first Black American to represent the state in the Senate.
Other wins include Democrat Andy Kim becoming the first Korean American senator in New Jersey and Fani Willis, the Fulton County district attorney prosecuting Trump, being reelected. Monique Worrell also reclaimed her seat as a state attorney in Florida.
These victories bring hope to liberals amidst the disappointing results of the election. The fight for progress continues as Democrats look towards the future.
