Record Number of Black Lawmakers to Take Seat in Upcoming Congress

The 119th Congress set to be sworn in next year will boast a record number of Black lawmakers, with Angela Alsobrooks making history as the first Black woman from Maryland to be elected as a U.S. senator. The focus has largely been on the fact that Republicans will control the House and Senate, but there will also be an unprecedented number of Democrats in the Congressional Black Caucus, with a total of 62 members. Additionally, there will be five Black Republican lawmakers, bringing the total number of Black lawmakers in Congress to 67, the highest ever recorded. The Congressional Black Caucus, established in 1971, has grown significantly over the years, with a goal to address common political challenges and interests. In light of President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda, the caucus has vowed to fight against parts of it, seeking to build America’s social compact where work dignity is respected and opportunities for wealth are created. Alsobrooks, a Democrat, and other newly elected Black members are ready to work on behalf of their constituents, with a strong focus on education and healthcare issues.
