The Maryland Department of the Environment will be hosting a public hearing to discuss proposed amendments to the plans for the reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed in March after being struck by a cargo ship. The proposed amendments include construction of additional temporary piles and a temporary trestle for the bridge rebuild project. President Joe Biden has included funds for the Key Bridge rebuild in a request to congress, with an estimated cost of $1.2 billion. In August, the Maryland Transportation Authority approved a $73 million contract for the design and construction of the new bridge by Kiewit Infrastructure Company. Renderings show plans for a new bridge that will stand 45-feet taller than the original. The public hearing will assist in determining a decision on an application for a Wetlands License associated with the proposed construction work. The goal of the project is to provide the construction access needed for replacing the Key Bridge, which resulted in the deaths of six construction workers in the collapse.
