A recent study conducted by the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade revealed that over half of Korean companies operating in Vietnam experienced technology theft by their employees this year. The survey of 335 firms highlighted the prevalence of technology leaks and threats from both foreign and Korean employees, rival companies, and others in the country. This alarming trend marks a significant increase from the previous year, with 55 percent of companies reporting such issues compared to 34.6 percent.
The survey identified non-Korean employees as the primary culprits in technology theft, followed by partner firms, rival companies, and Korean employees. Industries such as automobile, petrochemical, and semiconductor companies were most affected by these breaches, with different groups being responsible for the theft.
The main cause of technology leaks was attributed to a lack of security in personnel and document management within the companies. To address these growing concerns, the institute recommended strengthening security measures within the companies and providing systemic support from the government. Suggestions included implementing technology protection guidelines, security system consulting services, and a guidebook to assist companies in international legal disputes.
This study underscores the need for Korean companies operating in Vietnam to prioritize cybersecurity measures to safeguard their technologies and intellectual property from potential threats. By taking proactive steps to enhance security protocols, businesses can mitigate the risks associated with technology theft and protect their valuable assets in the international market.
