Counseling for parents could decrease rates of truancy.

A recent article on absenteeism in Maryland schools sheds new light on the recommendations made by the Kirwan Commission. The experts behind the commission suggested a costly overhaul that fails to address the significant problem of absenteeism. The issue of absenteeism cannot solely be blamed on schools, as parents play a crucial role in their children’s education. Many neglectful parents may themselves be victims of poverty and dire social circumstances.

In response to this, there is a suggestion to explore the root causes of absenteeism and implement a program of peer parents intervention. This would involve concerned neighborhood volunteers working with parents who have truant children to provide one-on-one support, education, and networking. The hope is that this approach could be more effective than the current truancy bureaucracy and would not add additional costs to the already extensive Kirwan recommendations.

The call for a more personal and community-based approach to addressing absenteeism in schools comes from John Boronow, M.D., of Lutherville. This proposed solution aims to provide much-needed support to neglectful parents and ultimately improve student attendance and performance.
