Maryland sports betting hit a major milestone in August, bringing in $5.5 million in tax revenue. State bettors wagered a total of $377.38 million during the month, surpassing $100 million in tax revenue since the launch of sports betting in December 2021. The increase in handle and tax revenue was significant compared to the previous year, with 11 online sports betting operators and 12 retail sportsbooks in operation.
FanDuel maintained its top position in Maryland, with the highest handle of $160.71 million in online sports bets for the month. DraftKings followed with $119.28 million in handle, and BetMGM rounded out the top three with $32.17 million.
Overall, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Commission reported total gaming revenues of $39.25 million for the month, with online sports betting bringing in $368.4 million in handle and retail sports betting totaling $8.9 million. Despite not reaching July’s tax revenue total of $6.2 million, the August figures still represented a significant boost in tax revenue for the state’s public education programs.
The sports betting program in Maryland continues to grow, with new operators like Veterans Services entering the market with a handle of over $322,000 in August. With a wide range of online sports betting operators and retail sportsbooks to choose from, Maryland’s sports betting industry shows no signs of slowing down.
