The state of Maryland saw record-breaking sports betting revenue in September, generating $62.5 million in adjusted revenue on a $532.9 million handle. This led to $9.4 million being contributed to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, the highest amount since sports wagering began in the state nearly three years ago. The gross revenue of $65.4 million in September was up 43.4% compared to the same month in 2023, making it the third-highest ever recorded in Maryland.
Online sports betting accounted for the majority of the handle, with 11 online and 12 retail sports betting operators in the state. The NFL played a significant role in the increase in sports betting action in September, generating 21.8% of all individual sports wagers with a handle of $116.4 million. Parlays also saw a significant increase in revenue, producing $50.3 million on a 25.2% hold.
FanDuel had a standout month in September, leading the way with a Maryland-best handle of $231.8 million and gross revenue of $32.9 million. DraftKings and BetMGM also had strong showings, with DraftKings accepting $175.9 million in wagers and BetMGM seeing a significant increase in handle compared to the previous month.
Overall, Maryland saw significant growth in sports betting revenue in September, with record-breaking numbers contributing to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund. This success is attributed to the popularity of football betting and an increase in online sports betting activity.
