Fire Chief Warns D.C., Maryland, and Virginia Residents about Winter Hazards

As winterlike temperatures approach, fire crews in District Heights, Md. are reminding people to take precautions to prevent small fires caused by improper use of space heaters and generators. The Prince George’s County Fire Department has seen an increase in emergency calls due to the temperature drop, with many incidents stemming from faulty use of heating devices. Battalion Chief Eric Reith emphasized the importance of following safety guidelines, such as keeping space heaters at least 3 feet away from combustible items, plugging them directly into outlets, and never using them to dry clothing. Reith also advised against using kerosene or propane heaters in enclosed spaces. Additionally, proper use of generators is crucial, with Chief Reith recommending keeping them outside the house to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. It is also essential to have smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in place, and residents can contact the fire department for installation assistance. By being mindful of these tips, individuals can stay warm safely during the winter season.
