Climate advocacy group brings attention to fossil fuel lobbyists in State House once more

Advocacy group F Minus has released a new report focusing on the lack of oversight of fossil fuel lobbyists in the Maryland State House. The report, titled “Inherent Vice,” grades states on lobbyist disclosure laws, with Maryland receiving a C-plus. F Minus found a pattern of incomplete and inaccurate information provided by fossil fuel lobbyists in disclosures to the Maryland State Ethics Commission.

The report highlighted instances where lobbyists gave anti-climate testimony while representing pro-climate organizations. F Minus argues that without better disclosure of lobbyists’ activities, it is difficult to fully understand the extent to which fossil fuel advocacy is harming non-fossil fuel clients.

The advocacy group is calling for monthly disclosure reports from lobbyists, as lobbying is a year-round activity, even in states with part-time legislatures. F Minus suggests that governors committed to fighting climate change, such as Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, call out fossil fuel lobbyists for failing to comply with disclosure requirements.

F Minus founder James Browning believes that exposing the tactics of fossil fuel lobbyists is crucial in the fight against climate change. The report card from F Minus aims to shed light on the issue and urge for more transparency and accountability in fossil fuel lobbying activities across the country.

Overall, the report emphasizes the importance of proper disclosure and oversight of fossil fuel lobbyists to address the climate crisis effectively.
