WEG, in collaboration with COPEL, UFSM, and VEGOOR Tecnologia Aplicada, has conducted a research project aimed at increasing the reliability and useful life of power transformers in Brazil. The project involved replacing Kraft paper with hybrid paper as a solid insulator in the active part of transformers, as well as swapping mineral oil for vegetable insulating liquid for sustainability. The technological upgrades, including the inclusion of a direct temperature measurement system and automation controls, led to a higher power transformer capable of providing 73.6 MVA to the system. The upgraded transformer was installed at the Governador Parigot de Souza Hydroelectric Plant in ParanĂ¡, where it operated more sustainably and reliably. The use of vegetable oil and hybrid paper not only reduced environmental impact but also resulted in cost savings during the installation process. This project showcases WEG’s commitment to innovative technology and sustainability in the energy sector.
