Maryland’s newly formed Task Force on Responsible Use of Natural Psychedelic Substances has started its work to reform the state’s laws on substances like psilocybin, DMT, and mescaline. The 17-person task force, overseen by the Maryland Cannabis Administration, aims to ensure broad, equitable, and affordable access to psychedelic substances in the state.
During their initial meetings, members discussed various issues including permitting requirements, access to treatment, and production of natural psychedelic substances. Chair Andrew Coop emphasized the importance of responsible and educated use of these substances for the benefit of all Maryland residents.
The task force plans to submit a report with recommendations to the governor and legislature by July 31, 2025, in time for potential legislation in the 2026 session. The discussions also included considerations for expunging prior convictions and releasing incarcerated individuals related to psychedelics offenses.
The group will continue its work and aims to engage various stakeholders to provide input on the reform efforts. Members highlighted the importance of including voices from different perspectives to ensure comprehensive and effective policy recommendations.
In light of Maryland’s recent efforts to expand access to cannabis and address social equity in the industry, the task force’s work aligns with the state’s broader goals of promoting responsible use of substances and ensuring equitable access to therapeutic treatments. Governor Wes Moore’s administration continues to prioritize progressive drug policy reform to benefit residents and promote public health and safety.
