Maryland football’s seniors played a key role in establishing Michael Locksley’s culture

Maryland football’s 2021 senior class has been instrumental in the program’s turnaround under coach Michael Locksley. Despite a lackluster season this year, the Terps have experienced their best four-year run since the early 2000s, with the senior class laying a foundation for future success.

Key players from the senior class include defensive standouts Tommy Akingbesote, Taizse Johnson, and Dante Trader Jr., as well as running back Roman Hemby, and wide receiver Tai Felton. Akingbesote and Johnson have been dominant on the defensive line, Trader has been a force in the secondary, Hemby has led the ground attack, and Felton has emerged as one of the best receivers in the country.

Hemby, in particular, has had a standout career with multiple 100-yard rushing games and impressive statistics. McDonald has also contributed as a secondary option in the ground game, while Felton has emerged as a standout receiver and a leader on the team.

Despite the individual success of the senior class, the team as a whole has faced challenges this season with four straight losses. The seniors acknowledge that their final collegiate season did not end as they had hoped, but they take pride in the foundation they have laid for the program’s future success.

As the Terps prepare to face No. 4 Penn State in their final game of the year, they reflect on their contributions to the program and look ahead to the legacy they leave behind.
