Maryland Humanities has unveiled new Indigenous Maryland Inquiry Kits designed to educate K-12 students about Native American history and culture in the state. These online resources, available on the website thinkport.org, offer a selection of research topics, primary source evaluation, and historical theme analysis for students. Supported by the Library of Congress, Maryland Public Television, and consultants from Native American tribes, the kits cover topics such as craftwork, interactions with settlers, and tribal recognition.
In addition to the kits, Maryland Humanities is also launching a statewide Smithsonian exhibition titled Spark! Places of Inspiration, highlighting innovation in rural America. The exhibition will feature interactive elements, photographs, videos, and objects to provide a multilayered exploration of innovation across different aspects of life. Each host partner for the exhibition will also create their own exhibit to complement the Smithsonian’s displays.
This project is part of Maryland Humanities’ ongoing Museum on Main Street program, which brings educational exhibits to small communities throughout the state. The Spark! exhibition will open in May 2025 and travel to various locations across Maryland over the next year.
