Maryland Senator is Proposing Legislation to possibly Delay Proposed Transmission Line

Maryland Senator Christopher West has proposed a series of bills during the upcoming 2025 Maryland General Assembly session to address the state’s energy needs. One bill would postpone a decision on a proposed 70-mile transmission line until May 1, 2026 to allow for further analysis of power generation issues in the state. West noted that Maryland currently imports electricity from other states due to a lack of in-state power generation.

Despite efforts to increase renewable energy sources, only 7.8% of Maryland’s electricity comes from wind, solar, and hydro sources. The closure of remaining power plants in the state exacerbates the energy shortfall. West emphasized the need for a diverse energy portfolio to ensure reliable electricity supply.

Residents can expect an increase in their electric bills next year due to accelerated retirements of fossil-fuel power plants, increased electricity demand, and a constrained transmission grid. BGE estimates an average increase of $19 per month for residential customers, while Potomac Edison customers could see a monthly increase of $19.37.

The discussions surrounding energy challenges in Maryland underscore the need for a comprehensive approach to address the state’s power needs. Senator West’s proposed bills aim to provide a roadmap for a more sustainable and reliable energy future for Maryland residents.
