Former CSM Student Finds Success in Hollywood with Visual Effects Career

Tierra Harris, a former student at the College of Southern Maryland (CSM), has made a name for herself in the visual effects industry in Hollywood, California. Starting her higher education path as a teenager in Hollywood, Maryland, Harris credits her time at CSM and her studies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) for her successful career in visual effects for television and film.

Harris, who graduated from CSM in 2016, attended Leonardtown High School and the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center, where her interest in graphic communications began. She then enrolled in CSM’s dual-enrollment program, later becoming a full-time student and active member of the collegiate robotics team.

After receiving her associate degree from CSM, Harris went on to graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor’s degree in Communications and Media and Technology Studies. She participated in a Hollywood Internship Program, interning at the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) and The Refinery Creative.

Harris eventually shifted her focus to visual effects and landed roles with Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures, working on shows like Black Lightning and Carnival Row. She continued to build her career, working on projects for Netflix, Apple TV, Marvel, and Disney Plus.

Harris’s journey serves as an inspiration to current and future students at CSM. She is currently enrolled in the Harvard Graduate Extension School, pursuing a graduate certificate in Front End Web Development, showcasing her dedication to lifelong learning and continued success in the visual effects industry.
