Maryland’s highly anticipated basketball season is set to kick off with the debut of five-star recruit Derik Queen, who will take the court for the Terrapins in their regular-season opener against Manhattan. Queen, a Baltimore native, is a skilled center who spent three years at the prestigious Montverde Academy where he earned McDonald’s All-American honors. Standing at 6-foot-10 and 246 pounds, Queen is known for his post play and impressive hands on both offense and defense. Maryland head coach Kevin Willard has high praise for the freshman, calling him a “generational talent” with an incredible feel for the game. Queen joins forces with standout big man Julian Reese as the Terrapins look to improve on a struggling 16-17 record from last season.
On the other side, Manhattan is coming off a disappointing 7-23 season but returns key guards Shaquil Bender and Jaden Winston. Bender led the team in scoring last season, while Winston was instrumental in facilitating the offense. Winston is determined to lead the Jaspers to more wins in his sophomore season, with coach John Gallagher aiming for a turnaround after a string of losing seasons. The matchup between Maryland and Manhattan promises to be an exciting start to the season for both teams as they aim to make their mark in college basketball.
