Four suspects have been charged in Maryland for allegedly conning an elderly woman out of nearly $40,000 in a “pigeon drop” scam. James Davis, Connie Williams, Kenneth Gooden, and Mary Daniel were arrested just moments before allegedly targeting another victim in Clinton. The suspects convinced the victim to withdraw money from her account as collateral for a fake donation to charity. PGPD’s Financial Crimes Unit tracked the suspects to a shopping center in Clinton and arrested them as they approached another potential victim in a parking lot.
A 50-year-old suspect, William Coleman of Orange Park, Florida, is also facing charges in connection with two “pigeon drop” scam investigations in Prince George’s County. Coleman was arrested in Orlando on Tuesday. Anyone with information about the suspects or who believes they may be a victim of the scam is encouraged to contact PGPD’s Financial Crimes Unit.
The “pigeon drop” scam is a scheme where thieves promise victims a cut of “found” cash in exchange for collateral. In this case, the suspects targeted elderly individuals, taking advantage of their trust and vulnerability. It’s important for people to be cautious when approached by strangers offering money or asking for financial transactions, and to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
