CDC reports slivered onions as probable source of E. coli outbreaks at McDonald’s with cases reaching 90

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that the number of E. coli cases linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders has risen to 90, with one reported death and 27 hospitalizations. The outbreak is believed to be linked to slivered onions used on the burgers. McDonald’s has removed all affected Quarter Pounders from their restaurants since October 22 to prevent further risk to the public. The most recent case was reported on October 16. Colorado health officials ruled out the beef patties as the source of the outbreak, and the FDA is inspecting the processing center of the supplier of the onions, Taylor Farms Colorado Springs. A family in Grand Junction, Colorado, reported that their 15-year-old daughter developed hemolytic uremic syndrome after eating a Quarter Pounder from McDonald’s. Thirteen states have reported cases, and McDonald’s has stopped sourcing onions from Taylor Farms indefinitely. Other restaurant chains in Colorado have also removed onions from their menus as a precaution. Despite the high number of reported cases, the true number is likely much higher as most people with E. coli infections are never tested and recover on their own. The CDC believes that any further risk to the public is very low.
