Federal prosecutors appointed to supervise Election Day threats and fraud complaints in Maryland

Assistant U.S. attorneys Bijon A. Mostoufi and Joseph Wenner have been appointed by the Maryland U.S. Attorney’s Office to oversee the U.S. Justice Department’s Election Day program on Nov. 5. They will be responsible for handling complaints involving voting rights, threats of violence to election officials or staff, and election fraud. The program aims to ensure public confidence in the electoral process by providing local points of contact for reporting potential federal election law violations.

It is illegal under federal law to threaten violence against election officials or staff, intimidate or bribe voters, alter vote tallies, or engage in other forms of election fraud. The Voting Rights Act also protects the right of voters to mark their own ballot or receive assistance due to language barriers or disabilities. U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland Erek Barron emphasized the office’s commitment to protecting these rights and prosecuting those who interfere with the voting process.

Mostoufi and Wenner will be available in Maryland while the polls are open to address any potential violations. Marylanders can report election fraud and other abuses on Election Day to the local FBI field office or directly to the Civil Rights Division in Washington, D.C. Barron stated that any case warranting prosecution will be pursued. For more information or to report violations, individuals can contact the appointed attorneys or visit civilrights.justice.gov.
