The 2024 election is not just about the presidential race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, but also about control of both chambers of Congress, which are up for grabs. Several sleeper races could determine the majority in the House or Senate and impact the next president’s agenda.
In Texas, Democratic Rep. Colin Allred is challenging Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, who is casting Allred as too liberal for the state. Nebraska sees an independent populist candidate, Dan Osborn, challenging two-term Republican Sen. Deb Fischer. Republican Larry Hogan in Maryland is aiming to become the first Republican to win a Senate seat since 1980. In Florida, Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is challenging Sen. Rick Scott, who has a history of winning by slim margins.
In Pennsylvania’s 10th District, Republican Rep. Scott Perry faces a tough challenge from Democrat Janelle Stelson. Virginia’s 2nd District will be an early bellwether for Republican performance, with Rep. Jen Kiggans facing a challenge from Democrat Missy Cotter Smasal after district redrawing.
Wisconsin’s 3rd District sees GOP Rep. Derrick Van Orden facing a challenge from Democrat Rebecca Cooke, while in Texas’ 34th District, Democratic Rep. Vicente Gonzalez faces a test of whether Latinos are shifting towards the GOP. Finally, California’s 47th District, an open seat in Newport Beach, will be a test for Republicans in a district that has trended blue but still remains a potential flip for the GOP.
