A new report from a House task force investigating an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during a July 13 rally has found that the Secret Service did not properly plan or coordinate with local law enforcement. The report states that there was a lack of planning and coordination between the Secret Service and its law enforcement partners before the rally, leading to missed opportunities to engage the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks. Crooks climbed onto the roof of a building and fired shots at the rally stage and crowd, killing one person and injuring three others.
The task force’s interim report is based on interviews with local law enforcement, thousands of pages of documents, and testimony from a public hearing. It found that fragmented lines of communication allowed Crooks to evade law enforcement and carry out the attack.
The report also details the lack of coordination among law enforcement agencies on the morning of the rally, with the Secret Service failing to participate in briefings held by local police. The task force is continuing to conduct interviews with federal officials and others to gather more information about the incident.
The panel is also investigating an alleged assassination attempt against Trump at his golf course in Florida in September. They have requested information and records from the Secret Service, FBI, and ATF. The report highlights the need for improved planning and coordination between law enforcement agencies to prevent future incidents.
