Scores of people have been killed in Israeli strikes in northern Gaza over the weekend, with continued attacks in Lebanon also taking place. The killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar did not lead to new cease-fire talks, as hoped. There were fears of further conflict after a drone strike was launched towards Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence, with Israel planning an attack on Iran in response to strikes associated with Hamas and Hezbollah leaders assassinations. The local health ministry in Gaza reported at least 87 deaths and over 40 injuries in Beit Lahia due to Israeli strikes. The IDF disputed the death toll, stating it was exaggerated. The situation in both Gaza and Lebanon was devastating, with children among the casualties.
Amidst the violence, President Biden had expressed optimism about cease-fire negotiations, but the situation remained grim. Israeli forces continued operations in Gaza and Lebanon, with dozens of militants killed in ground encounters. Hamas vowed to continue actions against Israel, accusing them of committing a massacre in Beit Lahia. In Lebanon, IDF forces invaded the south, targeting Hezbollah members and dismantling their infrastructure. Prime Minister Netanyahu indicated that the war was not over, emphasizing the need to stop the “axis of evil” comprising Iran and its allies. The conflict in the region showed no signs of easing, with continued violence and destruction unfolding in both Gaza and Lebanon.
