Despite Mistrial in Killing of John O’Keefe, Family Continues Fight for Justice after Karen Read’s Trial

Karen Read is facing a retrial for the death of Boston police officer John O’Keefe, which was initially declared a mistrial after a hung jury earlier this year. O’Keefe’s family fully supports the retrial as they seek justice for his death, which they believe was caused by blunt force trauma and hypothermia from being run over by Read’s SUV.

Read, an equity analyst who was dating O’Keefe at the time, has been charged with second-degree murder, motor vehicle manslaughter, and leaving the scene of a fatal collision. Prosecutors allege that Read backed into O’Keefe outside a retired police sergeant’s home and left him for dead after a troubled relationship ended.

The defense argues that law enforcement officers, including the police sergeant and an ATF agent, may have been involved in O’Keefe’s death, prompting a biased investigation by a state trooper. However, O’Keefe’s family does not believe in the conspiracy theories and are focused on seeking justice for their loved one.

Throughout the trial, tensions flared between supporters of O’Keefe’s family and a local blogger, known as “Turtleboy,” who has been accused of witness intimidation in connection with his coverage of the case. Despite the challenges faced by the family during the trial, they continue to stand by O’Keefe’s memory and seek a resolution in the upcoming retrial scheduled for early next year.
