China conducts military exercises near Taiwan to deter independence aspirations

China conducted large-scale military drills around Taiwan as a warning to “independence forces” on the island following criticism of a speech by Taiwan President Lai Ching-te. The drills, called “Joint Sword-2024B,” focused on joint operations capability with the Chinese army, navy, air force, and rocket force. The Chinese military views Lai as a separatist and troublemaker, and these exercises were seen as a stern warning against Taiwan Independence forces.

Taiwan’s National Defense Ministry criticized the war games as irrational and provocative, with the Mainland Affairs Council stating that the Republic of China’s existence is an undeniable fact. Lai, in his speech marking Taiwan’s National Day, emphasized that Taiwan and China were not subordinate to each other and that China has no right to represent Taiwan. He declared his commitment to resisting any encroachment upon Taiwan’s sovereignty.

Chinese officials criticized Lai’s speech as advancing Taiwan’s independence and attempting to increase tensions across the Taiwan Strait for his political interests. Despite concerns about Beijing as a threat, most people in Taiwan believe that China is unlikely to invade in the next five years, according to a recent poll by Taiwan’s top military think tank.

China has escalated military activities around Taiwan in recent years, with frequent military planes and ships approaching the island. The drills around Taiwan are part of China’s efforts to safeguard state sovereignty and national unity, according to Chinese authorities. The tense situation between China and Taiwan reflects ongoing tensions between the two governments over issues of sovereignty and independence.
