Two people died and over two dozen were treated after a hydrogen sulfide leak at a Pemex facility in Deer Park, Houston. The leak occurred when workers were working on a flange, resulting in two fatalities and 35 employees requiring medical attention. A shelter-in-place order was issued as a precaution but was lifted after air monitoring reports showed no hazardous pollutants. Pemex Deer Park confirmed a “gas release” at their site but stated that the incident was contained and isolated to their operations. Emergency vehicles and ambulances were seen at the scene, which is co-located with a Shell refinery site. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is aware of the incident. The incident highlights the risks associated with living in Houston, a hub for petrochemical facilities in the United States.
