Israeli attack leaves at least 28 dead in Gaza school serving as refuge for displaced people

In the latest attack in Deir el-Balah, an Israeli air strike on a school-turned-shelter in the central Gaza Strip has resulted in the death of at least 28 people and injuries to dozens more. The Israeli army claimed the strike targeted Hamas fighters operating from the building, but Palestinian authorities have condemned the attack as a massacre on the displaced families seeking shelter at the school.

Children and women were among the victims, with many bodies torn to pieces, making identification difficult. The Israeli army did not provide any warnings before striking the building. This attack is part of a series of strikes on school buildings housing displaced Palestinians in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of many children and women.

The UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has also reported damages to many of the schools used as shelters. The attacks have caused significant casualties and destruction in Gaza, where fighting has been ongoing for more than a year.

In a separate incident, at least 15 people were killed in another school-turned-shelter strike in Jabalia refugee camp. The Israeli military has launched a renewed ground assault in the area, resulting in arrests of males over 14 years old.

Overall, at least 42,065 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began in 2023. The Palestinian authorities have condemned these attacks and called for an end to the violence against civilians and displaced families in Gaza.
