Former President Donald Trump’s latest threat on the campaign trail involves directing the Justice Department to pursue criminal charges against Google if he is elected president in 2024. Trump accuses Google of unfairly displaying negative news articles about him while only showing positive stories about his potential opponent, Kamala Harris. He claims this is illegal interference in elections and vows to prosecute Google if the Justice Department does not.
Google has denied manipulating search results to benefit any party and asserts that both campaign websites appear at the top of search results for relevant queries. However, conservatives have long criticized Google for favoring Democrats in search results. Trump’s campaign has also raised concerns about the Harris campaign using sponsored search results to promote positive news coverage.
This threat from Trump is part of a pattern of him vowing to prosecute perceived opponents. He previously threatened to pursue criminal charges against individuals who allegedly engaged in election fraud against him and called for the prosecution of Nancy Pelosi for not preventing the January 6 Capitol attack. At a campaign rally in Michigan, he also called for an investigation into Pelosi and her husband over stock sales. Trump’s post about Google search results is just the latest example of him using the power of the presidency as a threat against those he perceives as enemies.
