In Blackshear, Georgia, a firefighter, Vernon Leon Davis, died while attempting to protect others from Hurricane Helene. He had been setting up barricades around a live power line when a tree fell on his truck, killing him. Davis had been a firefighter for over 30 years and was remembered as a dedicated individual who would do anything for anybody. His family found some comfort in knowing that he died while serving others. The storm claimed more than three dozen lives in Florida, Georgia, Virginia, and the Carolinas, with at least 15 deaths reported in Georgia alone.
In Catawba County, North Carolina, a 4-year-old girl was killed in a head-on car crash during heavy rain conditions. The crash also injured three other children and the drivers of both vehicles. While impairment was not believed to be a factor, charges were possible pending the completion of the investigation.
Davis, who worked at Ware State Prison for decades, was known for his dedication to helping others, including training inmates in firefighting. He was described as a man of integrity who loved his family and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Despite the tragedies caused by Hurricane Helene, Davis’s family highlighted his positive outlook on life and his ability to appreciate each day as a blessing. His brother fondly remembered their close relationship and shared that they were always best buddies, doing everything together. Davis leaves behind his wife, adult sons, a brother, and two sisters in mourning his loss.
