World leaders are gathering at the United Nations General Assembly in New York amidst a series of crises in Israel, Gaza, Sudan, Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Haiti, Myanmar, and Ukraine. Many of these conflicts are fueled by the supply of arms from powerful countries, enabling atrocities against civilians. Calls are being made for world leaders to take action to save human lives, including cutting off arms to warring parties, restricting jet fuel to abusive militaries, and extending arms embargoes. The need for a civilian protection mission in Sudan, enforcement of international criminal court warrants, and implementation of orders to protect civilians in various countries is emphasized. Despite challenges such as the veto power in the UN Security Council, there is hope for progress through international solidarity and principled leadership. Initiatives such as South Africa’s case against Israel and Gambia’s case against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice demonstrate how countries can stand up for human rights. Calls for Security Council permanent members to explain their vetoes, efforts to pressure governments to address human rights abuses, and upcoming resolutions on Israel’s occupation are highlighted as steps towards peace, sustainable development, and human dignity. It is hoped that this year’s UN theme of “Leaving no one behind” will inspire meaningful action from world leaders.
