Meta hosted its annual Connect conference in Menlo Park, California, where they unveiled a trove of new hardware and software. The most exciting announcement was the Orion glasses, described as the most advanced glasses ever created. These glasses can project digital representations onto the real world and are controlled by a wrist-based neural interface. No release date has been set for the prototype, but CEO Mark Zuckerberg called it a glimpse into the future.
In addition to the Orion glasses, Meta also announced upgrades to its Ray-Ban smart glasses, with more AI features like reminders and live translation. They also introduced the new Llama 3.2 open-source AI model for developers to create more advanced applications. Users will now be able to interact with Meta AI by speaking to it, with responses voiced by celebrities like Judi Dench and John Cena.
Meta also revealed a new virtual reality device, the Quest 3S, which is a cheaper alternative to the Quest 3. They will be phasing out the Quest 2 and Quest Pro by the end of the year. The company aims to create a future that is more open, accessible, and focused on human connection. Technology analysts see this as a major leap forward in blending virtual and physical environments, but emphasize the need to address user concerns about AI. The marathon to integrate AI seamlessly into daily life continues, with Meta leading the way.
