As the war in Ukraine enters its 941st day, the situation remains tense with ongoing fighting and political developments. In Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-biggest city, 21 people were injured in a Russian air attack using glide bombs on an ordinary residential building. Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov reported that two of the injured were in critical condition and 18 buildings were damaged in the attack. In Donetsk, a Russian air attack struck homes in Sloviansk, injuring three people, and two miners were killed in a shelling at a mine west of Pokrovsk.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched 80 Shahed drones and two missiles at Ukraine overnight into Sunday, with 71 drones shot down by air defenses. Moscow claimed that a firefighter was killed in a Ukrainian drone attack in Russian-occupied Luhansk. Meanwhile, in the Belgorod region of Russia bordering Ukraine, at least 12 people were injured in Ukrainian shelling.
On the diplomatic front, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to the United States to present a “victory plan” for peace to President Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Donald Trump. The International Chess Federation rejected a proposal to readmit Russia and Belarus but will consider allowing players under 12 or with disabilities to participate in tournaments.
In terms of weapons, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov announced talks with European partners to secure Swedish Gripen and European Eurofighter Typhoon jets, in addition to commitments for US-made F16s and French Mirage aircraft deliveries.
The situation in Ukraine remains dire as fighting continues and political efforts are made to achieve a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
