Schumer is optimistic about avoiding government shutdown

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer believes that there is a good chance that the government will not shut down at the end of the month. Congress has just over a week to pass a short-term funding bill to avert a government shutdown on October 1st. Last week, House Republicans voted down their own plan to prevent a shutdown, creating tension in discussions about keeping the government open. Schumer mentioned that he is close to reaching an agreement with Speaker Mike Johnson, who is expected to unveil and vote on a short-term bill this week. Schumer criticized Johnson’s previous strategy involving passing both a short-term funding bill and the SAVE Act, calling it unworkable. Former President Donald Trump had urged Republicans to shut down the government if they can’t tie a bill to the SAVE Act, a bill related to voting and elections. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell criticized the idea of shutting down the government so close to the election, stating that it would be politically problematic. Ultimately, the decision to avoid a government shutdown will be a discussion between Schumer and Johnson. There is a sense of urgency to reach an agreement and avoid any delays that could negatively impact the American people.
