Paratroopers from 12 NATO nations gathered in the central Netherlands to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Operation Market Garden, one of World War II’s boldest missions. Hundreds of paratroopers jumped out of planes over Ginkel Heath, where World War II veterans and 60,000 spectators watched the tribute.
Among the veterans present was 99-year-old Geoff Roberts, who recalled his experience landing in Wolfheze before the main drops at Ginkel Heath. The operation aimed to capture key bridges and roads from Nazi occupiers in the Netherlands to pave the way for Allied forces to advance into Germany. However, stiff German resistance and logistical challenges prevented its success.
Operation Market Garden resulted in the deaths of 11,500 Allied troops in nine days, making it one of the most significant battles of World War II. Despite the mission’s failure, the spirit of unity and cooperation among the participating nations laid the foundation for the NATO alliance.
General Christopher Cavoli, the top U.S. military commander in Europe, emphasized the importance of collective action and the bonds forged during times of crisis. He highlighted how the alliance comes together in times of trouble, building on the shared history and spirit of cooperation exemplified by events like the Operation Market Garden commemoration.
