In Lebanon, a wave of explosions targeting communication devices used by Hezbollah resulted in dozens of casualties, with at least 37 people killed and nearly 3,000 injured. Dr. Elias Warrak, an eye doctor, said he treated around 40 to 50 patients with serious injuries, some of whom lost both eyes. The injuries were so severe that some patients needed neurosurgery to remove shrapnel from their brains. Warrak believes the patients were injured while looking directly at the exploding devices. Hezbollah blamed Israel for the attacks, which Israel has not claimed responsibility for. Israel launched a new wave of attacks against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon in response.
The explosions overwhelmed hospitals and left people fearful of using electronic devices. Israel also conducted a targeted strike in Beirut, killing a top Hezbollah official. Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, acknowledged the severity of the attacks in a televised address. Warrak described the situation as devastating, as he had to remove more eyes in a couple of days than ever before. The attacks have escalated tensions in the region and brought about significant humanitarian and security challenges.
